Erling Haaland needs just one more club to complete a remarkable Premier League scoring record, with Sunderland the only side he has faced without finding the net.

The fixture therefore presents Haaland with a personal target as well as an opportunity for Manchester City to continue their strong start to the campaign.

Squawka’s prediction indicators give Haaland a 57% chance of scoring on Sunday. The figure reflects the striker’s form at the beginning of the season and underlines the likelihood that he could end Sunderland’s status as the one remaining club he has failed to score against.

The statistic was highlighted in a post stating that Haaland had scored against 24 of the 25 Premier League clubs he had faced, while Sunderland were still “the lone side” waiting for a goal from him. It also noted that the two clubs had met twice last season without Haaland scoring.

Manchester City go into the match second in the Premier League table with 12 points from four matches. They have the same total as leaders Arsenal, but Arsenal sit top because of their superior goal difference.

Sunderland, by contrast, are 14th with four points. Their total has come from one win, one draw and two defeats.

They will now attempt to preserve the unusual distinction of being the only Premier League club Haaland has played against without scoring. That task comes against a Manchester City side beginning the season near the top of the table and a forward who has already found the net against almost every opponent in his Premier League career.
