Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has described the return of Dejan Kulusevski to full training as being like a “new signing” for the club.
The Sweden international has not played for Tottenham for 19 months, with his most recent appearance coming during the 2024-25 season. He returned to full training this week as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.
“We have to handle Dejan Kulusevski in the best possible way, working together with the medical and fitness staff,” De Zerbi said at a news conference.
“His return is a big gain for us.”
De Zerbi also praised Kulusevski’s character and ability, while stressing that the 26-year-old’s recovery must be managed carefully on a daily basis.
“He is a good player and a great person, and he deserves to play again,” the Tottenham manager added.
“We have to work hard day by day. The international break is important for him too because, when he is fully fit and has recovered from the injury, I think he will be a great addition.
“A new signing for us – another important signing.”
Reports suggest Kulusevski could be close to returning to competitive action after the next international break.
Tottenham are preparing to face Aston Villa in the fifth round of the Premier League. De Zerbi’s side are still searching for both their first goal and their first victory of the campaign.
Kulusevski underwent surgery on the cartilage of his patella, commonly known as the kneecap, after playing against Crystal Palace in May 2025.
He then had another operation on his injured right knee in March 2026, after he was seen limping during Sweden’s final training session.
The player later explained the procedure in a post on Instagram.
“I had a minor operation on my knee two weeks ago,” Kulusevski wrote. “The operation was carried out and what was not supposed to be there was removed. My knee is now in excellent condition.”
Kulusevski has made 146 appearances for the London club in all competitions, scoring 25 goals and providing 30 assists.
He joined Tottenham’s senior squad before establishing himself as a regular contributor, but his progress has since been disrupted by the extended knee problems that have kept him out of action. His return to training now gives the club the prospect of adding another attacking option once he is considered ready to play.
