Tyrell Malacia set to join Cincinnati after Manchester United exit

Tyrell Malacia is close to joining American club Cincinnati as a free agent, according to The Athletic.

The 27-year-old Netherlands defender trained with the club last week before an agreement was reached for him to move to the United States. His arrival would be completed without a transfer fee.

Malacia is expected to join Cincinnati after defender Matt Miazga moved closer to a transfer to fellow MLS side New York City.

The left-back began his Manchester United career with 39 appearances during his first season at the club. However, a serious injury kept him out of action for 550 days and had a significant impact on his progress.

He made only three Premier League appearances last season, playing a total of 15 minutes.

Malacia joined Manchester United from Feyenoord and was unable to establish a regular place in the team after his prolonged absence. His proposed move to Cincinnati would give him the chance to rebuild his career in Major League Soccer.

Cincinnati are ninth in the Eastern Conference with 32 points, with nine rounds of the regular season remaining.

The top nine teams in the conference qualify for the play-offs to compete for the MLS title.
