Stellenbosch FC bring back Carling Knockout hero Darrel Matsheke

Stellenbosch FC have confirmed the return of midfielder Darrel Matsheke, who has rejoined the club for a second spell and could feature against Kruger United in the Betway Premiership this weekend.

Matsheke was previously with the Winelands club during the 2023/24 season, when he formed part of the squad that won the Carling Knockout.

The midfielder played a key role in the final against TS Galaxy, scoring Stellenbosch’s winning penalty as they secured the trophy in a shootout.

He made 12 appearances in all competitions during that first spell before moving on to Pretoria Callies and Kruger United. He also had a brief spell on the books of Marumo Gallants.

Matsheke said his return had come as a surprise but that he was determined to make full use of the opportunity.

“It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC,” he said through the club’s media department.

“It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here. I can only thank God for the opportunity, and the Club and the coach for trusting me enough to bring me back.

“I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete for more. I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there’s a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals.”

The club has confirmed that Matsheke will wear the number 31 shirt. He could make his second Stellenbosch debut when the Maroons face Kruger United in the Betway Premiership this weekend.

His return comes as Gavin Hunt’s team seek to improve a difficult start to the season. Stellenbosch have won only one of their six matches so far, leaving them on six points and ninth in the standings.

Matsheke’s arrival gives him another opportunity to pursue the ambitions he was unable to fulfil during his first stay, including playing in Africa.

The midfielder’s previous appearance for Stellenbosch came during a campaign that ended with silverware, and his decisive contribution in the Carling Knockout final remains the defining moment of his first spell.

He will now hope to begin his second chapter at the club by helping Hunt’s side move up the Betway Premiership table.
