Darrel Matsheke: South Africa midfielder returns to Stellenbosch FC from Marumo

South Africa midfielder Darrel Matsheke has returned to Stellenbosch FC from Marumo, completing a move to the Betway Premiership club on 18 September 2026.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder previously represented Stellenbosch during the 2023-24 season, when he was part of the club’s South African Cup-winning campaign. His return brings him back to a side with which he has already secured a major domestic honour.

Matsheke joins Stellenbosch after spending the previous season with Marumo. He moved to Marumo from Kruger United on 7 July 2025, with that transfer recorded as a free transfer. Before joining Kruger United, he had spent a short period with Pretoria Callies, switching clubs in January 2025 in another free transfer.

His career has included spells with several South African clubs. Matsheke joined Stellenbosch for the first time in October 2023 after being without a club, having previously left Kaizer Chiefs in August of that year. He had earlier been registered with Kaizer Chiefs, following loan spells at Moroka Swallows and Uthongathi.

Matsheke began his senior-club career with Kaizer Chiefs II before moving into the first-team set-up in November 2020. His later loan assignments gave him experience with Uthongathi during the 2021-22 season and Moroka Swallows in 2022-23, before he returned to Kaizer Chiefs at the end of each respective loan period.

The move back to Stellenbosch comes at the beginning of the 2026-27 Betway Premiership season. Matsheke had not made an appearance for Marumo in the competition before completing his switch, with the club having played six possible matches at the time of the transfer.

Matsheke is now back with Stellenbosch FC, having joined the club from Marumo on 18 September 2026.
