Stellenbosch FC have confirmed the return of midfielder Darrel Matsheke for a second spell with the club.

The 27-year-old joins from fellow Betway Premiership side Marumo Gallants after previously representing Stellenbosch during the 2023/24 campaign.

Matsheke was part of the Stellenbosch squad that won the Carling Knockout under Steve Barker. He also converted the decisive penalty in the shootout victory over TS Galaxy in the final.

The former Kaizer Chiefs academy player made 12 appearances for Stellenbosch before leaving the club. He subsequently played for Pretoria Callies, Kruger United and Bahlabane Ba Ntwa.

“It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC,” Matsheke told the club’s website.

The midfielder said his return had come as a surprise but that he was grateful for the opportunity to rejoin the Cape Winelands club.

“It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here. I can only thank God for the opportunity, and the Club and the coach for trusting me enough to bring me back,” he said.

Matsheke added that he wanted to continue from where he had left off and help Stellenbosch challenge for further success.

“I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete for more. I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there’s a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals.”

He will wear the number 31 shirt and could make his second Stellenbosch debut this weekend when the club face his former side Kruger United in the Betway Premiership.
