Matsheke returns to Stellenbosch for second chance in Betway Premiership

Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke has rejoined Stellenbosch FC, giving the 27-year-old an opportunity to revive his career after several months without a club.

Matsheke has returned to the Winelands side for a second spell and could make his comeback when Stellenbosch face Kruger United in the league this weekend.

The midfielder left Marumo Gallants in December 2025 without making a competitive appearance for the club. He had joined Gallants at the beginning of the 2025/26 season after departing Motsepe Foundation Championship side Kruger United.

However, his position at the club became uncertain soon after Alexandre Lafitte was appointed head coach, and Matsheke subsequently fell out of favour.

He was later linked with a number of clubs, including Magesi FC and former employers Kruger United. TS Galaxy had also previously been monitoring his situation.

Stellenbosch have now offered the former Kaizer Chiefs academy player a route back into the Betway Premiership.

“Stellenbosch Football Club is pleased to announce that midfielder Darrel Matsheke has rejoined the Club for a second spell,” the club said.

Matsheke previously played for Stellenbosch during the 2023-24 season and was part of the squad that lifted the Carling Knockout trophy.

He scored the decisive penalty in the shootout victory over TS Galaxy in the final, but made only 12 appearances in all competitions during his first spell.

The midfielder later represented Pretoria Callies and Kruger United before moving to Marumo Gallants.

Matsheke said he was grateful for the opportunity to return to Stellenbosch, describing the move as unexpected.

“It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC,” he said.

“It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here. I can only thank God for the opportunity, and the Club and the coach for trusting me enough to bring me back.

“I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete for more.

“I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there’s a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals.”

Matsheke will wear the number 31 shirt this season as he begins his second spell with Stellenbosch.

His return also gives him the chance to build on the contribution he made during his first stint, when he helped the club win the Carling Knockout and scored in the final against TS Galaxy.
