Kompany urges Bayern Munich to stay alert against changing Union Berlin

Vincent Kompany has warned Bayern Munich not to underestimate Union Berlin as they prepare to face a side adapting to a new coach at the Allianz Arena on Friday night.

Bayern will aim to secure three points in their final Bundesliga match before the international break, but Kompany believes Union’s recent changes could make them particularly difficult to read.

“Union have undergone a major transition. They’ve brought in a very successful coach,” Kompany said at his pre-match press conference.

“The confidence he exudes will also have an impact on the decisions made. Whatever happens, we’re prepared for any changes opponents might make.”

The Bayern manager said his squad had trained well during the build-up to the match and confirmed that every player was available for selection.

“I can only praise our medical unit and athletics department. We’re playing at the very highest intensity,” he said.

“We have the entire squad at our disposal and we want to keep it that way.”

Luis Diaz has also made a strong impression in training this week, with Kompany hopeful the forward can reproduce that form in a competitive match.

“He’s scored an incredible number of goals in training. It’s been a good week for him,” Kompany said.

“If he can carry that form into the match, he’ll be right back on track.”

Serge Gnabry is another player in contention after completing his return to full fitness. Kompany indicated that the Germany international could be used in the number 10 role and is likely to feature.

“We’ve waited a long time for Serge to give us the green light that he’s feeling well,” he said. “I reckon he’ll get some game time against Union.”

Kompany also gave his full backing to goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, saying the young German has the potential to become Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper in the future.

“If anyone thinks he won’t become number one in Germany, they’re making a big mistake,” he said.

“He’ll certainly be Germany’s number one at some point. Jonas has the right mentality. As a country, you have to develop your talent.”

Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund was similarly encouraged by the club’s progress. Freund has extended his contract until 2029 and said he was happy with both his role and the direction of the club.

“I feel very much at home at the club, especially with the people here,” Freund said.

“We’ve got a lot of things off the ground and want to carry on the work. I enjoy coming to work every day and I’m delighted.”

Kompany, though, is focused on completing the first part of the season with another victory before his players depart for international duty.

“First, we intend to focus on the task at hand and pick up three points against Union,” he said.
