Mosimane explains Zwane recall as veteran earns place in first Bafana Bafana squad

Pitso Mosimane says he has clear reasons for including 37-year-old Themba Zwane in his first Bafana Bafana squad since returning as head coach.

Zwane is among the most experienced players selected for South Africa’s upcoming fixtures: the 2027 Afcon qualifiers against Guinea at Orlando Stadium next Saturday and Eritrea at Al Salam Stadium on September 30, followed by an international friendly against Egypt at Cairo International Stadium in October.

His recall has attracted considerable attention, with the 2026 World Cup widely expected to have been his final major tournament as he approaches retirement. Zwane is also not currently a regular starter for Mamelodi Sundowns.

The attacking midfielder’s selection is consistent with Mosimane’s stated approach of preserving continuity while introducing younger players who can benefit from the experience of senior members of the squad. However, the coach did not provide specific details about why he had chosen Zwane, who remains regarded as one of the finest talents to emerge from the PSL.

Speaking at Safa House on Thursday, Mosimane said his decisions were based on several factors.

“Someone asked whether I look at form, quality, experience, and the absence of those who are injured. I said yes,” he said.

“You don’t choose simply because you want to choose, right? I don’t choose Themba Zwane, who’s 37, just because I want to choose him or because I worked with him at Sundowns. I have my reasons why I choose Themba Zwane.”

Mosimane also indicated that Zwane would remain important to Bafana Bafana in the immediate future. He identified Zwane, goalkeeper Sipho Chaine and incumbent captain Ronwen Williams as the three principal leaders who would help guide the team during his tenure.

Zwane has repeatedly benefited from the backing of coaches throughout his career. His inclusion gives him another opportunity to contribute to the national side, while he remains prepared to support the team whenever Mosimane calls on him.
