Mamelodi Sundowns lose three key players for Al Ahly Saudi Intercontinental Cup clash

Mamelodi Sundowns will be without three players for Saturday’s meeting with Al Ahly Saudi in the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup, part of the Intercontinental Cup.

The South African side face the Asian champions in a highly anticipated contest between the winners of Africa and Asia, but must manage a number of significant injury absences before the fixture.

According to Saudi newspaper Al Riyadiya, defender Khuliso Mudau will miss the match after suffering a complete rupture of his Achilles tendon during a league game last month. The injury is expected to keep him out of action for the coming period.

Mudau’s absence leaves Sundowns without an important option in their defensive line, with the coaching staff now required to prepare a suitable replacement for the match against Al Ahly Saudi.

Sundowns will also be without defender Keanu Cupido, who remains sidelined by a long-term shoulder injury following surgery. He is continuing his recovery away from first-team football.

Brazilian forward Arthur Sales is the third absentee. He has been unavailable since suffering a shoulder injury in July, depriving Sundowns of one of their attacking options for the meeting with Al Ahly Saudi.

The injuries come as Sundowns enjoy a strong start to the season. The South African club are top of the domestic league and have also reached the final of the MTN8.

Their schedule remains demanding after the Intercontinental Cup fixture. Sundowns are due to face Orlando Pirates on 10 October in the South African “Clasico”, a match regarded as one of the most significant contests of the season for both clubs.

Sundowns will therefore attempt to maintain their positive early-season form while adapting to the loss of three players against Al Ahly Saudi. The match carries added importance as part of the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup and brings together the champions of Africa and Asia.
