Mbappe explains Ceuta support shirt and targets Ballon d’Or return to Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe says Real Madrid’s decision to wear a shirt in support of Ceuta was intended to show solidarity with those affected and send a “positive message” of peace.

The Real Madrid forward explained the gesture in an interview with Spanish newspaper AS after the club’s players wore the shirts before their 3-2 La Liga victory against Elche in the sixth round of the season.

“I want to explain it properly so people understand what happened,” said Mbappe. “It was a decision taken by both clubs, and as players we had to wear the shirt.”

Mbappe said his support extended beyond Ceuta and its victims, adding that his comments were motivated by his views as much as his status as a footballer.

“The first thing I want to say is that I have complete solidarity with Ceuta and all the victims, because before being a footballer, I am a human being,” he said.

“But I also wanted to express my solidarity and thoughts towards all the migrants who have lost their lives and those living in difficult conditions.

“There are people suffering, and it hurts me greatly to see that in the world. I am someone who wants the best for the world we live in. I want to send a positive message and a message of peace, and I hope these issues are resolved quickly.”

Mbappe also believes his performances for Real Madrid and France make him a strong contender to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

“I think this is a suitable year to win the Ballon d’Or,” he said. “My best lawyer is my feet. However much I talk, the most important thing for me is for the Ballon d’Or to return to Real Madrid.”

He added that he wanted the award to be presented at the Santiago Bernabeu and shared with the club’s supporters.

“I want it to return to the Santiago Bernabeu and to the Real Madrid fans, and to return for all those people in order to give them happiness and hope. These fans deserve it more than anyone else.”

Mbappe also praised Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, saying he expected the Spain international to enjoy a successful career.

“I think he is a player with immense talent, and I have a feeling he will have a great career,” Mbappe said. “I wish him all the best.”

Mbappe has scored seven La Liga goals this season, the same number as Yamal. He is two goals behind leading scorer Raphinha, who has nine.

Real Madrid are second in the table with 15 points after six matches, three points behind leaders Barcelona. They face Atletico de Madrid in the Madrid derby on Sunday in the seventh round of La Liga, with the match taking place at Wanda Metropolitano.
