Kruger United rule out further signings after landing first Betway Premiership win
Kruger United do not expect to make any more signings before the transfer window closes on 21 September, despite having collected just four points from their opening six Betway Premiership matches.
The newcomers moved up to 13th in the table after securing their first-ever victory in the top flight, beating Mpumalanga rivals TS Galaxy 1-0 last weekend.
That result lifted the Village Boyz out of the danger zone, but the club remain involved in a battle to establish themselves in the Betway Premiership. Sporting director and team manager Elasto Kapowezha believes the squad has already been strengthened sufficiently during the current window.
“We have strengthened our team over the last five matches. Before our game against TS Galaxy, we managed to bring in a few players, such as Lesedi Kapinga. As it stands, we have signed 21 new players in this transfer window, which closes on the 21st,” Kapowezha told KickOff.
Kruger United’s extensive recruitment has followed their promotion to the top division, with the club now preparing to rely on the group assembled so far rather than pursue additional reinforcements.
“So, if we sign someone before the window closes, it will have to be someone special. We believe the team we have is strong enough to carry us until the January transfer window. We have signed enough players, so we are fine for now,” Kapowezha added.
He said the priority was now to allow the squad to develop an understanding of the coach’s methods, rather than make further changes before the next transfer period.
“We need to give the current players enough time to settle and understand what the coach wants. Right now, we are not looking at anyone or assessing anyone,” he said.
Kapowezha also confirmed that the club are not planning to release any players before the January window, when they expect to have a clearer view of which members of the squad should remain.
“At this stage, we are not planning to release anyone. I think January will give us a good understanding of who to release and who to keep,” he said.
Kruger United will attempt to build on their win against TS Galaxy when they host Stellenbosch FC at KaNyamazane Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00.
