Thomas Tuchel admits England switched to defensive approach too early in World Cup semi-final defeat

Thomas Tuchel has admitted he may have changed England to a more defensive system too early during their 2-1 defeat by Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semi-final.

The German manager defended his tactical decisions in a documentary about England’s tournament campaign, but accepted that the timing of the changes was wrong.

England had led 1-0 until the 85th minute before Argentina produced a dramatic late turnaround. Two months on, Tuchel said he was still struggling to come to terms with the collapse.

“You can try to kill me here, but this is my scar, not yours,” Tuchel said in the documentary.

The defeat ended England’s hopes of winning their first World Cup since 1966, with British media placing much of the blame on Tuchel’s cautious tactical choices.

“Nobody suffers more than me and nobody wants to win more than me,” Tuchel said, according to RMC SPORT. “They can torture you endlessly and think, ‘If you had made different changes, we would have won the match.’ But you do not know that.”

Tuchel said England’s growing fatigue throughout the tournament, combined with Argentina’s late attacking push, had influenced his decision to add defensive protection.

“Of course, we could have made attacking changes,” he said. “Nobody knows what would have happened. We could have done that and perhaps lost 2-1, then asked: ‘Is he crazy? He finished the match against Norway with five defenders, so why did he not finish it with five defenders against Argentina?’”

He added: “Based on what I saw, my experience, the information I had and the level of recklessness Argentina were showing – successive changes and constant attacking substitutions – this was my solution to the problem.

“That is the essence of a manager’s intervention. I am trying to help. We do not do anything out of selfishness or anything like that. We are simply trying to help.”

‘We needed help’

Anthony Gordon had put England ahead in the 55th minute, but the side came under increasing pressure as the match progressed. The pressure peaked shortly before a second-half water break, when Argentina missed a clear opportunity.

Tuchel responded by replacing Gordon with defender Ezri Konsa.

“It was a decisive moment,” he recalled. “If I go back and think about what influenced my decisions, we allowed a clear goal to be scored just before the water break.

“I said to myself: ‘We will not survive this. This is the end. We are not keeping the ball, we are not defending well and we are not defending properly in a 4-4-2. We need help.’”

Tuchel changed England’s shape to 5-3-2 before moving to a 5-4-1, believing the formation would offer greater control against Argentina’s crossing and ensure three central defenders were available in the box.

“I even thought, ‘We will get through this,’” he said. “But it was too early. Far too early for that mindset.”
