Mosimane backs Mbuthuma after Orlando Pirates striker earns Bafana Bafana recall

Pitso Mosimane has defended his decision to recall Orlando Pirates striker Yanela Mbuthuma to the Bafana Bafana squad, insisting the forward deserves an opportunity at international level.

Mbuthuma has been included in Mosimane’s final squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea later this month.

The call-up marks the 24-year-old’s first involvement with the senior national team since June 2025. He had faced criticism from sections of the Orlando Pirates fan base, particularly this season, after failing to score or provide assists.

However, his club coach Abdeslam Ouaddou continued to back him during that period.

Mbuthuma, formerly of Richards Bay, has recently improved his form in front of goal. He has scored twice in the league and contributed assists in the MTN 8, helping Orlando Pirates reach a fifth successive final. He has also provided assists in the CAF Champions League.

Mosimane said Mbuthuma offered more than just goals and had demonstrated the desire required to compete for the national team.

The Bafana Bafana coach was asked why he had selected a player who had been labelled an “enemy” by some of his own club supporters.

“Well, I don’t know what other people are saying and I don’t know why people brand him as an enemy,” said Mosimane.

“I think he’s a national team player. He scores goals for Orlando Pirates. I think you’ve seen him scoring few goals in Orlando Stadium.

“And yes, maybe he’s not scoring as much as you want, but he does score and he’s got a physical presence also and he’s hungry.

“Give him a chance.”

Mosimane’s selection means Mbuthuma will have the opportunity to re-establish himself in the national team during the upcoming qualifiers. The striker’s recent contributions for Orlando Pirates, along with his physical presence and hunger, have convinced the coach that he merits inclusion despite the criticism he has received.

The forward’s return comes as Mosimane names his first final Bafana Bafana squad for the matches against Guinea and Eritrea, with the two fixtures scheduled to take place later this month.
