Neom SC defender Malang Sarr set for first Senegal call-up under Patrick Vieira

Senegal new coach Patrick Vieira is expected to hand Neom SC defender Malang Sarr first international call up ahead of the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month.

The 27-year-old defender, who previously represented France at youth level, has been on Senegal’s radar and was shortlisted by former coach Pape Thiaw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

However, Sarr was ultimately left out of Senegal’s final squad for the tournament, with his omission generating considerable debate in Dakar.

The Neom SC defender could now have another opportunity to represent Senegal at senior level following the appointment of Vieira as the national team’s new head coach.

According to reports, Sarr is expected to be included in Vieira’s squad for the upcoming international break, which will feature Senegal’s opening two matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Vieira is scheduled to announce his first Senegal squad on Friday, September 18, with Sarr reportedly set to be among the new faces in the team.

The defender’s inclusion would strengthen Senegal’s options at the back, particularly given his experience playing at a high level in European football before moving to Saudi Arabia.

Sarr came through the youth ranks at OGC Nice before making his senior breakthrough and later playing for clubs including Chelsea, AS Monaco, RC Lens and other European sides.

Should Vieira hand him his first senior call-up, Sarr would have the opportunity to begin a new chapter in his international career with Senegal.
