Brighton fight back to knock Manchester United out of Carabao Cup

Brighton & Hove Albion came from two goals down to beat Manchester United 3-2 at Old Trafford and eliminate them from the Carabao Cup.

Manchester United appeared to be in control after scoring twice inside the opening 10 minutes. Shea Lacey put the hosts ahead in the eighth minute before Mason Mount doubled their advantage two minutes later.

Brighton responded just before half-time, with Charalampos Kostoulas reducing the deficit in the first minute of added time.

The visitors completed their comeback after the break. Pascal Gross levelled the match in the 65th minute, and Maxim De Cuyper scored four minutes later to put Brighton ahead and secure their place in the last 16.

Aston Villa also progressed with a 3-1 victory over Coventry City.

Tammy Abraham scored twice for Villa, finding the net in the seventh and 59th minutes, while Ross Barkley added their other goal in the 40th minute. Coventry City’s only response came from Victor Torp, who scored in the 27th minute.

Everton advanced at the expense of Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Charles Alcaraz scoring the only goal of the match in the 80th minute.

Sheffield United suffered an early exit after losing 1-0 to Fleetwood Town. The decisive goal came in the 57th minute when Sheffield United player Reece Norrington-Davies scored an own goal.

Manchester City will face Norwich City on Thursday evening in the final match of the Carabao Cup’s round of 32.

The teams to have reached the last 16 are Bournemouth, Bradford City, Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Fulham, Peterborough United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Brentford, Fleetwood Town, Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Aston Villa, along with the winner of Manchester City v Norwich City.
