Herve Renard makes public appeal to dual-national Issa Doumbia

Cote d’Ivoire manager Herve Renard has publicly urged midfielder Issa Doumbia to commit his international future to the Elephants.

The 22-year-old, who is also eligible to play for Italy and has already represented their Under-21 side, was discussed by Renard after the midfielder was left out of the squad for Cote d’Ivoire’s upcoming fixtures.

The Elephants will face Ghana and Somalia in Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying on 24 and 29 September respectively, before hosting Cameroon in a friendly on 3 October. All three matches will be played in Cote d’Ivoire.

Renard named eight new players in his first squad for those games, with most of the newcomers holding dual nationality. When asked specifically about Doumbia, the former France women’s manager said: “It is a sensitive subject.”

He then used the opportunity to make a direct appeal to the player, adding an emotional dimension to his comments as he attempted to persuade Doumbia to choose Cote d’Ivoire.

The coach described the call as “a beautiful assist”, underlining his willingness to leave the door open for the versatile midfielder.

Renard also explained why Strasbourg central defender Ismael Doukoure was not selected. The 23-year-old is considered not yet experienced enough for the squad and faces strong competition for a place in central defence.
