Mohamed El Shenawy suffers injury setback

Al Ahly captain Mohamed El Shenawy has suffered an injury setback ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month.

The experienced goalkeeper sustained a severe bruise and ligament sprain to his left elbow during the team’s 2-0 victory over Abu Qir Fertilizers on Tuesday night in the fifth round of the Egyptian Premier League.

The player is expected to undergo a rehabilitation and physical therapy programme over the coming days as the medical team works to restore him to full fitness.

Al Ahly returned to training on Wednesday at the Mokhtar El-Tetsh Stadium in Gezira following their victory over Abu Qir Fertilizers.

The players completed recovery exercises aimed at reducing fatigue before taking part in a series of ball drills as part of the technical staff’s preparations for the team’s upcoming fixtures.

Meanwhile, El Shenawy has been ruled out of Egypt’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers due to an injury setback.

His absence represents a setback for Hassan as Egypt prepare for the crucial qualifiers, with the head coach now expected to make adjustments to his squad ahead of the two matches.

El Shenawy has established himself as one of the key figures in the Egyptian national team and Al Ahly, making his absence a notable blow to the Pharaohs ahead of their September assignment.

Egypt will be hoping to begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign on a positive note when they take on Angola before facing South Sudan four days later.
