Women’s U20 World Cup: Brazil and United States head to extra time after 1-1 draw

Brazil and the United States will meet in extra time to decide their Women’s U20 World Cup last-16 tie after the sides remained level at 1-1 following 90 minutes.

The opening half was tightly contested, with both teams committing themselves to the challenge and creating only a handful of chances. Neither side was able to establish control or seriously trouble the opposition.

The match opened up after the interval, with Brazil and the United States adopting a more attacking approach.

The deadlock was broken in the 59th minute when Sofia Couta put Brazil ahead. Her goal gave Brazil the advantage and raised hopes that they could take control of the tie.

The United States responded quickly, however, with Ainsley McCammon restoring parity four minutes later in the 63rd minute.

The two goals, scored within five minutes of each other, proved to be the only major breakthrough in the match. Play then returned to a cautious pattern, with both teams protecting their shape and looking for opportunities to catch the other on the counter-attack.

Neither Brazil nor the United States could find a second goal during the remainder of normal time, leaving extra time to determine which team will reach the quarter-finals.
