Tottenham Hotspur plan Lucas Bergvall contract extension through to 2033

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to extend Lucas Bergvall’s contract by a further two years in an effort to keep the Sweden midfielder at the club until 2033.

Football Insider reports that the 20-year-old has already agreed a deal running until 2031, but Tottenham are now considering extending his stay for another two seasons.

The club are understood to regard Bergvall as a player capable of becoming one of the best midfielders in the world in the coming years. They therefore want to strengthen their position against potential interest from some of Europe’s leading clubs.

Tottenham rejected a £46m offer from Newcastle before the start of the season for Bergvall, underlining the importance they place on the midfielder.

Bergvall joined Tottenham’s senior set-up as the club sought to develop his potential, and the proposed extension would keep him under contract for the next seven years. The move would also provide further protection after Newcastle’s approach.

The contract discussions come during a difficult start to the campaign for Tottenham. They have yet to win in the Premier League, having suffered defeats by Newcastle and Brentford and drawn with Everton and Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham were also eliminated from the League Cup after losing 3-1 to Liverpool.

They will face Aston Villa in the fifth round of Premier League fixtures as they continue their search for a first league victory.
