Diomande’s Elche display intensifies Real Madrid battle with Yamal rival

Yan Diomande’s performance against Elche offered Real Madrid a glimpse of a player capable of filling two distinct attacking roles, underlining his growing case for more regular first-team involvement.

Making his second start for the club after the match against Rayo Vallecano, Diomande combined the qualities of a creator on the right with the direct threat of a forward operating from the left. His display suggested he can link play and provide service from one flank before becoming a more decisive finisher from the other.

Spanish newspaper AS praised the teenager’s contribution, saying Jose Mourinho’s cautious approach to managing his development could be understood as “progression and patience”, but added that “there is a big difference between training patience and tactical complacency”.

The report said Diomande still had considerable room for improvement, while already showing the explosive ability that has convinced many at Real Madrid they possess a player capable of making a significant impact.

At Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero, Diomande’s performance was shaped by his ability to adapt to changing tactical demands. He began on the right, where he did not make his usual aggressive vertical runs, instead delivering deeper crosses and providing a controlled creative outlet.

His role changed in the 68th minute when Vinicius Junior was substituted. Moving to the left, Diomande looked more dangerous, taking on defenders, cutting inside and shooting towards goal with greater purpose.

Although the left-sided position is theoretically Vinicius’ territory, Diomande sent a clear message to Mourinho that he can provide cover and decide matches with a direct, incisive style.

His influence was reflected in the statistics. Diomande created more chances than any other Real Madrid player, level with Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler. He was also third for passes into the final third, with 12, and third for crosses, one behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and Guler, who take responsibility for set-pieces.

Diomande’s work extended beyond attack. He made more ball recoveries and completed more defensive tackles than any other Real Madrid player, helping Alexander-Arnold deal with Elche’s wide threat and their system built around advanced full-backs.

Dribbling remains the most striking feature of his current form. According to AS, he completed seven of nine attempted dribbles against Elche half of Real Madrid’s total of 14 over the 90 minutes.

Mbappe failed to complete any of his three attempts, while Vinicius was also unsuccessful with his one attempt, leaving Diomande to provide the team’s main individual threat.

His figures are not confined to one match. Diomande is averaging 5.20 successful dribbles per 90 minutes for Real Madrid in La Liga, more than any other player. He leads Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, on 4.30, with Malaga’s Buga and Sevilla’s Ejuke both on 4.00.

Diomande has played 256 of Real Madrid’s 630 minutes this season 40%. A total of 63% of those minutes came in the past two matches, against Rayo Vallecano and Elche, when he played 72 and 89 minutes respectively.

He is expected to begin the derby against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano on the bench because of Arda Guler’s current form. However, Diomande’s recent emergence has created a fierce contest for a starting place what AS described as a “blessed dilemma” for Mourinho.
