Vinicius Junior promises goals will return before Real Madrid’s derby with Atletico Madrid

Vinicius Junior has warned Atletico Madrid that he expects to end his scoring drought when Real Madrid visit their city rivals in Sunday’s Madrid derby.

The Brazil forward played in Real Madrid’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Elche in La Liga on matchday six, but failed to score or provide an assist after missing several good chances.

Vinicius endured an afternoon of frustration in front of goal and was substituted by Jose Mourinho in the 68th minute. Real Madrid eventually secured all three points through Carlos Espe’s stoppage-time winner in the 90+1st minute.

The 25-year-old acknowledged his lack of accuracy in an Instagram story, while also making clear that he expects to make an impact against Atletico Madrid.

“My goals will return soon, I can’t keep missing all these chances! More is coming on Sunday, Hala Madrid,” Vinicius wrote.

Real Madrid will travel to the Metropolitano on Sunday evening for the seventh round of La Liga, with Atletico Madrid awaiting them in one of the most demanding fixtures of the season.

Vinicius contributed to Real Madrid’s attacking play against Elche through his movement and creativity, but could not add his name to the scoresheet. His message suggests he regards the derby as an opportunity to restore his goalscoring form.

The Brazilian’s statement came shortly after Real Madrid had needed a late goal to overcome Elche. Despite creating opportunities, the forward was unable to beat the goalkeeper during his time on the pitch before making way in the second half.

Real Madrid therefore approach the meeting with Atletico Madrid after a narrow victory, while Vinicius has publicly committed to providing more in the decisive area of the pitch.

His promise of an immediate response will add interest to the derby, as Real Madrid’s forward prepares for another chance to return to the scoresheet at the Metropolitano.
