Mamelodi Sundowns striker Brian Leon confident ahead of Al Ahli Saudi FC clash

Mamelodi Sundowns striker Brian Leon says his side are ready to face the quality of Al Ahli Saudi FC in Saturday’s Intercontinental Cup meeting.

Al Ahli Saudi FC will travel to Mamelodi Sundowns for the final of the Three-Continent Cup, a stage of the Intercontinental Cup, next Saturday.

Leon acknowledged the strength available to their opponents but believes Sundowns can approach the game with confidence as African champions.

“We are fully aware of the level of Al Ahli Saudi FC’s players, the strength and depth of their squad, as well as the quality and ability they possess,” Leon told the FIFA website.

“They are the champions of Asia and we are the champions of Africa, and they are thinking about us in the same way.”

Sundowns’ home advantage will be another positive factor, according to the striker, who believes the backing of the supporters can have a significant influence on the contest.

“Playing at home can only be a positive thing,” he said. “The support of the fans gives you a huge boost. For me, it does not matter what kind of match it is or who the opponent might be. When your supporters are singing for you, nothing compares with that.”

Leon also stressed that a final demanded the right mentality, while insisting every match should be played with the same level of intensity.

“When you play in a final, you have to treat it that way,” he said. “In my view, every match should be played with the same enthusiasm. You have to feel the pressure, but in the short period before the game, it is very difficult to produce your best without it.”

Despite the importance of the fixture, Leon said he was not feeling under pressure personally and believed players should avoid creating additional tension for themselves.

“Personally, I feel very calm and I am not under any pressure at all,” he said. “That is how you should approach this type of match; there is no need to put pressure on ourselves.

“That feeling will come a day before the game, or while we are on our way to the stadium. That is the kind of pressure you need – the spark that gets you fired up.”

Al Ahli Saudi FC began their campaign in this edition of the competition with a 1-0 victory over New Zealand side Auckland FC on 26 August.

Mamelodi Sundowns enter the tournament as the champions of the African Champions League.
