Richards Bay boss Ronnie Gabriel under pressure ahead of reunion with Papi Zothwane

Ronnie Gabriel’s position as Richards Bay head coach is facing growing scrutiny after a winless opening to the season, with Saturday’s meeting against former colleague Papi Zothwane offering a significant test.

Gabriel took sole charge of the Natal Rich Boyz in July after several seasons within the club’s coaching structure. The appointment was his first head-coaching role in the Betway Premiership, having previously worked as both an assistant coach and co-coach.

However, Richards Bay have struggled to make an impact in their first six matches. They have not won a game, drawing three and losing three.

Pressure increased considerably on Sunday when they were beaten 5-1 by Milford FC. The scale of that defeat is understood to have raised concern inside the club.

Although reports indicate that Richards Bay management have begun considering possible alternatives, no decision has been made about Gabriel’s future.

Zothwane reunion

Gabriel’s immediate opportunity to alter the situation comes against Sekhukhune United on Saturday.

The opposition will be led by Zothwane, who previously shared coaching duties with Gabriel at Richards Bay. Zothwane left the club at the end of last season to become an assistant to Cedric Kaze at Sekhukhune United, before recently being appointed the team’s head coach.

The two coaches had worked together with Siboniso Gumede as part of the Richards Bay staff. Their spell culminated in the club recording its first-ever top-eight finish in the 2024/25 season.

Zothwane will now return as an opponent while Gabriel attempts to produce a response and ease the pressure surrounding his position.

The match is scheduled to begin at 15:00 on Saturday in KwaZulu-Natal.
