Barcelona celebrate Camp Nou selection to host 2029 Champions League final

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has welcomed UEFA’s decision to award the 2029 Champions League final to Camp Nou, describing the choice as a major honour for the club and international recognition for its redeveloped stadium.

The decision was formally announced on Tuesday at a meeting of UEFA’s executive committee in Thessaloniki, Greece. Speaking to Spanish media afterwards, Laporta said: “It is a source of great pride for Barcelona and all our supporters.”

The president added that selecting Camp Nou was also an endorsement of the stadium’s future status on the world stage.

“This choice is also international recognition for the new Camp Nou, consolidating its position as a world-class stadium at the forefront of experience, technology, connectivity, accessibility and services,” he said.

Laporta said the stadium redevelopment would be fully completed in early 2028, with the new roof scheduled to be installed in the summer of 2027. He believes the opportunity to stage the final on Saturday, 2 June 2029, will provide significant momentum for Barcelona’s wider project.

The decision also carries political significance for Laporta, following the rebuilding of his relationship with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin after the collapse of the European Super League project.

Camp Nou will host the European Cup final for the third time. The stadium previously staged the 1989 final, when Milan lifted the trophy, and the memorable 1999 final, which Manchester United won after a late turnaround.

Laporta said UEFA’s decision reflected the scale of Barcelona’s plans for the stadium and the club.

“UEFA’s confidence in hosting one of the biggest events in world football highlights the size and ambition of this project, while establishing Camp Nou as a new symbol of Barcelona and an international benchmark,” he said.

The Barcelona president also thanked the institutions that supported the club’s bid, including Barcelona City Council, the Government of Catalonia and the Spanish Football Federation.

“I would like to express my sincere thanks to Barcelona City Council, the Government of Catalonia and the Spanish Football Federation for supporting this bid,” Laporta said.

“It is an important achievement that we have delivered together, strengthening the position of Barcelona, Catalonia and FC Barcelona on the global stage.”
