Karim Adeyemi’s Barcelona form puts him back in Germany plans under Jurgen Klopp

Karim Adeyemi has returned to the Germany squad’s radar, with new national-team manager Jurgen Klopp considering a recall for the next international break.

According to Sky Sport Germany, as reported by Catalan newspaper Sport, the 24-year-old forward is among the players Klopp is weighing for selection.

Adeyemi made his Germany debut on 5 September 2021, aged 19, and marked the occasion by scoring in a 6-0 victory over Armenia. The team was managed by Hansi Flick, who is now Barcelona head coach.

That promising start appeared to signal the beginning of an important international career, but Adeyemi’s progress with the senior side was interrupted by several periods on the sidelines.

He rebuilt his reputation with Germany Under-21s in 2024, playing a key role in European Championship qualifying. Adeyemi scored five goals in three matches, performances which brought him back into consideration for the senior team.

He was subsequently included in Julian Nagelsmann’s plans for the 2025 Nations League finals. The former Borussia Dortmund player featured in the quarter-final against Italy, the semi-final against Portugal and the third-place play-off against France, although he played a secondary role in each match.

Adeyemi was left out of the Germany squad again after that tournament and missed the World Cup. Klopp’s appointment could now offer him another route back into the national team.

His move to Barcelona this summer has changed the picture around his career. Adeyemi joined the Catalan club from Borussia Dortmund after four seasons in Germany, with Barcelona paying a fixed fee of 22m euros, plus incentives and add-ons.

He left Dortmund having scored 36 goals and provided 24 assists in 146 appearances.

Adeyemi has made an encouraging start at Barcelona, where Flick gave him a prominent role from the outset. He scored in both of the matches he started and also found the net in his most recent appearance, against Levante.

A regular starting place is not yet guaranteed, however. Adeyemi has acknowledged that earning playing time in a team such as Barcelona is difficult.

His early performances have nevertheless strengthened his case. His pace, ability to attack space and skill in taking on defenders have made him an important option for Flick.

The run of form could now lead to Adeyemi’s return to Germany duty. Almost a year after his last appearance for the national team, the Barcelona forward is moving closer to the international set-up, with Klopp’s arrival potentially marking a fresh beginning.
