James Rodriguez retires from international football after 131 Colombia appearances

James Rodriguez has announced his retirement from international football with Colombia, bringing an end to a career with the national team that lasted more than a decade.

The 35-year-old playmaker confirmed his decision on Tuesday, closing a significant chapter after making 131 appearances for the Cafeteros. Rodriguez scored 31 goals and provided 43 assists for his country.

His most memorable performances came at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he won the Golden Boot after scoring six goals. He was also awarded the tournament’s best goal for his strike against Uruguay in the last 16.

That goal helped Colombia reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their history, although they were eliminated by the hosts.

Rodriguez also represented Colombia at the 2018 and 2026 World Cups. Across his three World Cup appearances, he scored six goals and supplied four assists.

The former Real Madrid player announced his decision in a message to Colombia supporters on social media.

“The moment has arrived. Thank you for every match, every joy, every tear and every dream we shared. Wearing the Colombia shirt was one of the greatest honours of my life. Thank you, Colombia. Forever,” he wrote.

Rodriguez also played a prominent role in Colombia’s Copa America campaigns. He led the side to the final of the 2024 tournament and helped them finish third at the 2016 edition.

In total, he made 14 Copa America appearances, scoring once and registering eight assists.

His international career began with Colombia before he established himself as one of the leading attacking midfielders in world football. His displays at the 2014 World Cup earned him worldwide recognition, while his record for the national team placed him among Colombia’s most influential players.

Rodriguez leaves international football having contributed to 74 goals through scoring and assists, while his performances in major tournaments helped define one of the most successful periods in Colombia’s history.
