Inter Miami appoint former Argentina international Cristian ‘Kily’ Gonzalez as head coach until 2028

Inter Miami have appointed Argentine Cristian ‘Kily’ Gonzalez as their new head coach following the departure of Javier Mascherano and an interim spell under Guillermo Hoyos.

Gonzalez arrived in South Florida on Wednesday and will take charge of the first-team squad once the necessary formalities have been completed. His contract runs until June 2028.

“Cristian ‘Kily’ Gonzalez arrived in South Florida today and is set to officially take over as Inter Miami’s head coach,” the club said in a statement. “Following the completion of the necessary procedures, the Argentine coach will begin his duties as head coach of the first team under a contract through June 2028.”

With Inter Miami preparing to face Mexican side Cruz Azul in the Champions Cup on Wednesday evening, Gonzalez is due to lead his first training session on the day he begins work with the squad.

The match will be his first opportunity to manage Inter Miami from the touchline as the club attempt to compete for another trophy.

Gonzalez began his coaching career with the reserve team at Club Atletico Rosario Central. After two seasons, he was promoted to the senior side, managing 68 matches across three seasons.

He then took charge of Club Atletico Union de Santa Fe, where he oversaw 78 games during three seasons between 2023 and 2025. Most recently, he was head coach of Club Atletico Platense during the 2025 season.

Before moving into management, Gonzalez enjoyed a playing career spanning Argentina and Europe, winning major honours in some of the most competitive leagues in the world.

The former midfielder came through the youth system at Rosario Central and made his professional debut for the club in 1993. After a spell with Boca Juniors, he moved to Europe in 1996 to join Spanish club Real Zaragoza.

Gonzalez later played for Valencia and Inter Milan, achieving considerable success with both clubs.

During the 1999-2000 season, he won the Spanish Super Cup with Valencia. In Italy, he claimed successive Coppa Italia titles with Inter Milan in the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons, as well as the Serie A title in 2005-2006.

At international level, Gonzalez won 56 caps for Argentina and was part of the team that won the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
