Ezzalzouli rejects calls for apology after ‘All of Us Caballas’ shirt backlash

 

Abdessamad Ezzalzouli has responded to the insults, accusations and threats directed at him after he wore a shirt bearing the slogan “All of Us Caballas” in support of the people of Ceuta.

The Real Madrid and Morocco star faced a wave of threats on social media after wearing the shirt, with the slogan referring to the residents of the Spanish city. The initiative was launched by several groups as an expression of solidarity and support for Ceuta’s population, and was also supported by a number of football teams.

Ezzalzouli, who was born in Beni Mellal, Morocco, and grew up in Elche in Alicante province, wore the shirt alongside the players of Real Betis and Villarreal in the minutes before the Andalusian side’s 2-1 victory.

In a statement posted on his Instagram account, Ezzalzouli said the shirt had not been intended to make a political statement or show contempt for the Moroccan people.

“First of all, I would like to clarify one thing: at no point was the shirt referring to the city of Ceuta used for political purposes or with the intention of showing disdain for the Moroccan people,” he wrote.

He said the gesture was instead intended to support people facing difficult circumstances, regardless of their nationality.

“This shirt had a social purpose, as part of our support for the residents and families of an area who were going through a difficult situation, regardless of their nationality,” Ezzalzouli added.

However, he rejected any suggestion that his statement amounted to an apology.

“But at the same time, this is not an apology to anyone,” he said. “Anyone who wants to use this matter to cast doubt on my love for my country is free to do so.

“As for me, I will continue to live every day with my head held high, and I will continue to represent my roots with pride and sacrifice.”

Ezzalzouli’s response came after the controversy surrounding the shirt developed into personal attacks and threats online. He made clear that his intention had been social rather than political, while standing by his decision to show support for the people of Ceuta.
