Dino Toppmoller leaves Lens after dispute over assistant’s dismissal

Dino Toppmoller’s short spell in charge of Lens has ended after the club decided to part company with the German manager, with reports in Germany suggesting the decision was driven by a dispute over his assistant rather than the team’s results.

Lens have not officially announced Toppmoller’s departure, but Foot Mercato reported that the 45-year-old had left the club. The report was later confirmed by French newspaper La Voix du Nord.

Toppmoller’s tenure lasted only six matches and ended three days before Lens are due to face Monaco in Ligue 1. The timing of the decision has prompted questions, particularly because the club have lost two and drawn one of their past three league fixtures.

Yannick Cahuzac has emerged as the leading candidate to take temporary charge for the Monaco match. Cahuzac returned to Lens this summer after working as Olivier Pantaloni’s assistant at Lorient between January 2024 and June 2026.

He has strong support within the club and is close to sporting director Jean-Louis Leca, raising the possibility that he could remain in the role beyond the match against Monaco. However, his availability could be affected by his studies for the BEPF coaching qualification.

Cahuzac is expected to be absent for about a week each month while completing the course. French regulations state that a club must pay a €25,000 fine for every match managed by someone who does not hold the required coaching qualification.

The circumstances surrounding Toppmoller’s departure were reported in greater detail by German newspaper Bild. Its account said the manager’s dismissal was not directly linked to Lens’ recent results, despite the club’s difficult run in Ligue 1.

According to Bild, the dispute began when Lens told Toppmoller they intended to dismiss his assistant, Nelson Morgado. Morgado had worked alongside the German coach since 2017.

The assistant had reportedly caused frustration among some members of the club, particularly within the French coaching staff, because of his continued demands for greater commitment and intensity.

Toppmoller opposed the decision to remove Morgado, viewing it as direct interference from the club’s management in his technical responsibilities. The disagreement could not be resolved, and the conflict ultimately ended with the manager leaving Lens after only a brief period in charge.

Toppmoller had also relied heavily on Saudi Arabia international Saud Abdulhamid during his time at the club. The defender has since been sidelined by a knee injury and has not yet returned to competitive action.
