Wydad AC and Kaizer Chiefs battle for free agent Elias Mokwana

Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club and South African side Kaizer Chiefs have emerged as contenders for the signature of Elias Mokwana following the attacker’s departure from Tunisian club Espérance.

Mokwana is currently a free agent after Espérance terminated his contract over the weekend, making the South African forward available to clubs looking to strengthen their attacking options.

Wydad, who compete in Morocco’s Botola Pro League, have already made contact with the player’s representatives to express their interest and explore the possibility of securing his services.

The Moroccan outfit are understood to be monitoring Mokwana’s situation closely and could make a move for the attacker as they look to bolster their squad.

However, Wydad are not alone in the race, with Kaizer Chiefs also reviving their interest in the player.

The Soweto giants were previously keen on signing Mokwana before his move to Tunisia. Chiefs had identified the attacker as a target while he was still on the books of Sekhukhune United, but Babina Noko eventually opted to sell him to Espérance.

Kaizer Chiefs’ renewed interest has been triggered by Mokwana’s availability on the free-agent market, although they now face competition from Wydad for his signature.

The 25-year-old’s situation has therefore opened the door for a potential return to South Africa, but the interest from Morocco could provide him with another option as he considers the next chapter of his career.

Mokwana spent the previous season on loan in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Hazem, gaining experience outside Africa before returning to Espérance.

However, his return to Tunisia did not result in a long-term stay, with the club deciding to terminate his contract over the weekend.

With Mokwana now available without a transfer fee, both Kaizer Chiefs and Wydad could see the attacker as an attractive option, although the player’s decision will ultimately determine where he continues his career.

The battle for his signature is expected to intensify as both clubs assess the possibility of reaching an agreement with the player and his representatives.
