Fenerbahce held by Gaziantep after Matteo Guendouzi misses a clear chance

Fenerbahce’s difficult start to the Turkish league season continued as they were held to a goalless draw by Gaziantep at the end of matchweek five.

The result made the fixture the first game in the Turkish league this season to finish 0-0. Fenerbahce moved on to seven points, leaving them 11th in the table alongside Trabzonspor.

Both clubs have played five matches, recording two wins, one draw and two defeats. Their slow starts have left them six points behind leaders Galatasaray, who have 13 points.

Fenerbahce had a major opportunity to break the deadlock in the 36th minute when French midfielder Matteo Guendouzi was played in by a low cross. With the goal at his mercy, Guendouzi sent his effort wide of the target.

The visitors were also denied twice by the woodwork during the match. The posts and crossbar prevented Fenerbahce from taking the lead, extending their unwanted record since the start of last season.

Fenerbahce have hit the woodwork 26 times in the Turkish league since the beginning of last season, more than any other team in the competition.

Gaziantep’s point lifted them to eight points and seventh place, while Fenerbahce remained on seven points in 11th.

The Canaries will host Eyupspor in their next league match. Gaziantep, meanwhile, will travel to face Kocaelispor.
