Barcelona have decided against pursuing Racing Santander forward Yassir Zabiri, with manager Hansi Flick reportedly unconvinced the Morocco international is ready to meet the demands of the Catalan club.
According to Kicker, Flick has rejected the possibility of signing the 21-year-old, despite his outstanding start to the season in Spain. The German coach is understood to believe Zabiri still needs to develop the technical and tactical qualities required to establish himself at the highest level with Barcelona.
Zabiri joined Racing Santander after leaving Stade Rennais and has made an immediate impact. He scored a hat-trick against Elche on his first start before adding two more goals against Alaves.
That run has taken his tally to five goals in five Liga appearances. His performances have made him one of the early-season revelations in Spain and quickly raised his profile among leading clubs.
Interest grows in Spain
Barcelona’s decision has not stopped Zabiri from attracting attention elsewhere. Real Betis, Villarreal and Real Sociedad are among the clubs reported to be monitoring the striker after his impressive displays for Racing Santander.
His strong start is also consistent with the ambitions he expressed when he arrived in Santander. Zabiri said he was targeting 10 goals, and he has already reached half of that total after only five matchdays.
Racing Santander appear to have made a successful investment in the Moroccan forward. His three goals against Elche and brace against Alaves have helped increase his value and brought him to the attention of several prominent Spanish sides.
For now, however, Barcelona have chosen not to act. Flick is reported to have approved the decision to rule out a move, with Zabiri not yet considered the right fit for the club’s technical and tactical requirements.
The striker’s progress could still alter that assessment in the coming months. His current scoring rate gives him plenty of opportunities to challenge doubts about his readiness, although Barcelona’s position at present is clear.
Barcelona will soon face Racing Santander in their sixth match of the Spanish league season, giving Zabiri an opportunity to perform against the club that has decided not to pursue him.
