Ivory Coast midfielder Seko Fofana announces international football retirement

Ivory Coast midfielder Seko Fofana has announced his retirement from international football as the team gears up for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The experienced midfielder made 32 appearances for the Elephants, scoring seven goals since making his debut in November 2017.

Fofana, who currently plies his trade for Portuguese giants FC Porto was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil, adding a major international honour to his career.

The 31-year-old has, however, calls time on international football, bringing an end to his nine-year spell with the national team.

“Dear Ivorian supporters, the time has come for me to move on. It is with pride and deep gratitude that I have had the chance to represent my country.

Winning the continent’s most prestigious trophy was a childhood dream come true for me, and these memories will remain etched in the minds of millions of Ivorians forever.

His decision to step away from international football marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career, with Fofana now set to focus entirely on his club commitments.

Fofana’s retirement comes as Côte d’Ivoire continues to prepare for its next generation of international footballers, with the midfielder’s experience and contributions remaining an important part of the national team’s recent history.
