Michael Olise impresses in central role for Bayern Munich

Michael Olise once again showed his versatility for Bayern Munich by operating as a number ten during the 2-1 victory over SV 07 Elversberg.

The France international’s ability to influence matches from different areas has given head coach Vincent Kompany another valuable tactical option.

Kompany does not want to restrict Olise to one position. “Olise has freedom. He can start out wide or inside,” the Bayern coach explained. Rather than assigning him a fixed role, Kompany wants the 24-year-old to find spaces where his creativity and attacking instincts can cause the greatest damage.

That freedom is especially important in possession. “If he is in these spaces between the lines, it is because he feels he can be dangerous there,” Kompany said. The same principle applies on the wing, where Olise can use his one-on-one ability to beat defenders and create openings.

Kompany believes the attacker has the qualities required for both positions. “He has a complete game,” he said, before giving a clear answer when asked whether Olise should play centrally or wide: “Both.”

Olise is therefore likely to continue switching roles depending on the opponent and match situation. His flexibility allows Bayern to change their attacking shape without removing one of their most creative players.
