Kevin Guitoun: three reasons behind the Charleroi defender’s standout start

Kevin Guitoun has emerged as one of the key figures in Sporting Charleroi’s impressive opening to the Belgian season, with the Algeria international named Pro League player of the month for August.

The 30-year-old right-back has played a significant role in the club’s perfect start, contributing goals, assists and an attacking presence from the flank. Here are three things to know about his rise to prominence.

A decisive start to the season

Guitoun quickly established himself among the Pro League’s most influential players after the campaign began.

Sporting Charleroi won each of their first four league matches, and Guitoun’s performances have helped drive that strong run. He scored against Oud-Heverlee Leuven and Mechelen, while also providing an assist in the meeting with Kortrijk.

After six rounds of the championship, the defender had recorded two goals and two assists – an impressive return for a player operating primarily in defence.

More than just a defender

Guitoun’s impact cannot be measured solely by his goal contributions. His willingness to attack and ability to carry the ball forward have made him a constant threat on the right side.

He is fourth in the Pro League for the number of crosses delivered since the beginning of the season. He also ranks fourth for progressive carries, a statistic that recognises players who gain ground with the ball and help break through opposition lines.

That profile reflects the demands placed on the modern full-back. Guitoun regularly pushes forward, creates danger and provides an extra attacking option in the final third.

A career shaped by setbacks

His route into professional football was far from straightforward. Guitoun came through the youth systems at Valenciennes and Troyes, but was unable to establish himself at the highest level and instead had to continue his development in amateur football.

Time in Belgium, including spells with UR La Louviere and Olympic Charleroi, allowed him to maintain his ambitions. His opportunity in the professional game eventually arrived in 2022, when he made his debut for Bastia. He later played for Metz before joining Sporting Charleroi.

Another important milestone came in 2023, when he earned his first Algeria cap. Guitoun had hoped to be involved at the World Cup, but Vladimir Petkovic did not select him, despite circumstances appearing to favour his inclusion.

That setback has not weakened his resolve. At 30, Guitoun is making the most of a new season in which he has quickly become one of the leading figures at Sporting Charleroi.

The club’s next fixture is a seventh-round Belgian league match against Cercle Bruges.
