Mbappe says he is different from Messi and wants Mourinho simply to play him

Kylian Mbappe says he considers himself a different type of player from Lionel Messi, while joking that his main expectation of Jose Mourinho is simply to select him for Real Madrid.

The France forward was asked in an interview with French newspaper L’Equipe whether he could still see himself playing at the age of 39, as Messi has done.

“I see myself playing until I am 100 if necessary!” Mbappe replied, laughing.

“Would I be at the same level? That is a matter of intelligence: knowing when you are no longer able to continue. Messi has not had to ask himself that question because he is still capable.

“After that, Lionel Messi is Lionel Messi. I consider myself a different player. But he is one of those different players.”

Mbappe was also questioned about what he expected from Mourinho as Real Madrid manager.

“Quite simply, that he makes me play,” he said with a laugh. “After that, I think I am capable of adapting to everything else. I do not have any particular expectations. For him to be himself is more than enough.”

The forward was then asked whether he could imagine ending his career without winning the UEFA Champions League or the Ballon d’Or.

“Yes,” he said. “Victory is achieved on the pitch. Well, the Ballon d’Or also depends on voting.

“But before looking at what will happen in 10 years, you have to look at what is happening now. I have a great chance of winning the Ballon d’Or this year.”

Messi, a legend of Barcelona and Argentina, was 39 when he continued his career, the comparison prompting Mbappe to distinguish his own qualities while acknowledging the standing of the former Barcelona player.

Mbappe’s comments also set out his immediate priorities: remaining on the field, adapting to the demands around him and competing for the individual award this year, rather than focusing on whether he will eventually collect every major honour.
