Linton Maina pushes for bigger role at FC Koln

Linton Maina is turning an encouraging start with FC Koln into a genuine opportunity for a bigger role.

The 27-year-old winger impressed again in the 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen, scoring Koln’s opening goal after starting in place of the ill Said El Mala for a second consecutive week.

Maina has now recorded one goal and two assists across Koln’s first four competitive matches. His form has been building since preseason, when he looked sharper and more confident in the final third.

“I’m in pretty good shape, had a good preparation and am trying to implement what is expected of me and become more dangerous going forward,” Maina told GEISSBLOG.

His revival is particularly notable because he was considered a possible transfer candidate after a disappointing previous campaign. Under coach Rene Wagner, however, Maina has re-established himself and created a strong case for further starts.

Köln could use him in an attacking trio behind the centre-forward, potentially alongside El Mala and Mikey Moore. That combination would give Wagner pace and creativity across the front line.

Maina’s next chance comes Saturday away to struggling Hamburger SV. Given his recent displays, he is likely to remain a serious contender for another starting position.
