Jose Mourinho: Yan Diomande would be a guaranteed starter at any other club

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has explained why Ivorian star Yan Diomande is yet to command a starting role at the club.

Diomande, who joined the Spanish giants in the summer window from RB Leipzig has struggled for starting role since joining the club, with his first start coming against Rayo Vallecano at the weekend.

Despite limited game time, the Portuguese tactician believes Diomande possesses all the qualities required to be a regular starter, but faces an exceptionally difficult battle for a place because of the quality of players competing for positions in Real Madrid’s attack.

Mourinho argues that the situation would be completely different if Diomande were playing for a team with less competition for places.

“He lacks nothing. If he were in another team with players of lesser ability, he would undoubtedly be a starter playing the full 90 minutes in every match,” Mourinho said.

Despite his limited starts, Diomandé continues to be viewed as a player with significant potential and the ability to make an impact whenever he is given an opportunity.

Mourinho’s assessment will also serve as encouragement for the youngster, suggesting that his current role should not be interpreted as a sign that he is below the required standard at Real Madrid.

Instead, the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Real Madrid coach believes Diomandé’s biggest obstacle is the calibre of his teammates and the fierce competition for attacking positions.

With a long season ahead and Real Madrid competing on multiple fronts, Diomandé is expected to receive further opportunities to showcase his abilities. Consistent performances when called upon could eventually strengthen his case for more regular starts.

For now, however, Mourinho believes the youngster must remain patient and continue working hard, as breaking into Real Madrid’s first-choice lineup requires competing against some of the best players in world football.
