African forwards make their mark as Aubameyang, Kofane and Diao shine

African players played leading roles across Europe’s leagues at the weekend, with Assane Diao and Mohamed Belloumi scoring twice for their clubs, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang provided two assists for Deportivo La Coruna.

Senegal forward Diao helped Como maintain their unbeaten start to the season with a brace in a 4-1 victory over Genoa. His two goals were central to a result that extended Como’s run without defeat.

Belloumi also struck twice, although Hull City had to settle for a point against Chelsea. The Algeria forward scored both goals within six minutes as Hull City recovered to draw at Stamford Bridge.

Despite failing to win, Hull City remain third in the Premier League after the hard-earned draw in England.

Aubameyang was decisive in Deportivo La Coruna’s comeback against Villarreal, setting up both of his side’s goals. The Gabon international first created the equaliser for Lusimi Cruz before supplying Zakaria Eddahchouri for the winning goal in the 89th minute.

Villarreal had taken the lead in the 19th minute through Ivory Coast forward Nicolas Pepe. It was the former Gunner’s second goal of the season.

At the BayArena, Bayer Leverkusen were held to a draw by Augsburg despite taking the lead through a goal involving two African players.

Burkina Faso defender Edmond Tapsoba launched a long pass towards Cameroon forward Christian Kofane, who finished with a low shot to open the scoring in the 18th minute.

Bayer Leverkusen were unable to hold on to their advantage, however, and had to accept a share of the points.

Elsewhere, Mali midfielder Malick Yalcouye scored during Brighton’s 5-0 victory, while Guinea forward Serhou Guirassy made an impact for Borussia Dortmund.

Guirassy had two goals disallowed but also provided an assist for his club.
