Edouard Mendy announces retirement from international football with Senegal

Senegal and Al Ahli goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has announced his retirement from international football.

The decision was first reported by Senegalese website Taggat, which said Mendy had decided to end his international career and would make the announcement officially before the next international break.

Several hours later, Mendy confirmed the decision himself through his personal social media accounts.

The Senegal national team acknowledged the announcement on its official Instagram account, writing: “There are careers measured by the number of international appearances, titles and statistics, and there are careers measured by the place they occupy in the memory of an entire people.”

It added: “Edouard Mendy… your story with the Lions of Teranga now belongs to the latter category.”

Mendy informed Senegal manager Patrick Vieira of his decision before the squad was selected for the September international break.

The 33-year-old made 59 appearances for Senegal, conceding 34 goals and keeping 31 clean sheets.

He was part of the Senegal side that won the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations. Mendy is also awaiting the decision of the International Court of Arbitration regarding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Senegal are due to face Mozambique and Ethiopia in qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 2027 tournament will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
