Cape Town City claim Cape Derby honours with 2-0 win over Hope FC

Cape Town City secured Cape Derby bragging rights with a 2-0 victory over Hope FC at a sold-out Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Emile Witbooi and Cheswyn Philander scored in the first half as City held off their rivals in the headline fixture of matchday four in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Hope FC made a positive start and threatened the Citizens, but City managed to contain them during the opening stages. After 30 minutes, Gabriel Amato found Witbooi with a well-weighted pass and the forward produced a composed finish beyond Hope goalkeeper Dejean Ah Shene to put City ahead.

Witbooi then turned provider three minutes later. He laid the ball into the path of Philander, who applied the finishing touch from close range to double the advantage.

Hope continued to push after the interval, but City protected their lead to claim all three points. The result moves Cape Town City up to fifth place, while Hope FC fall to ninth.

In the other major fixture, Magesi FC defeated Highbury FC 1-0 in an Eastern Cape meeting between two of the division’s leading sides.

Naeem Amoojee, a former Highbury FC player, scored the only goal before half-time. Magesi defended their advantage successfully and took maximum points from the top-of-the-table contest.

The victory leaves Magesi, also known as Dikwena tsa metsi, top of the table with 12 points from four games. They are three points clear of Real Native FC.

The Bees’ difficult start continued as they were beaten 2-0 away by Hungry Lions FC. The result leaves The Bees in 16th place after four defeats from their opening four matches.

Venda FC suffered their third consecutive loss when they were beaten 3-2 at home by Upington City. Clinton Larsen is under increasing pressure, while Venda sit 15th with one point from four games.

Real Native FC climbed to second after recording successive victories with a narrow win over Lerumo Lions. Samuel Bafana Nana scored the only goal in the 60th minute, taking Native to nine points from four matches.

Elsewhere, Pretoria University drew 0-0 with ORBIT College, while Midlands Wanderers FC and North West University shared a 1-1 draw.

Gomora United were beaten 4-1 by Leicesterford City.
