Freiburg maintain perfect Bundesliga start with 5-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach

SC Freiburg moved top of the Bundesliga with a third consecutive victory, beating Borussia Monchengladbach 5-0 at the Europa-Park Stadion in a 21-goal Saturday programme.

Yannick Engelhardt opened the scoring with a powerful header in the 23rd minute, before Igor Matanovic doubled the hosts’ advantage with a long-range effort six minutes later.

Monchengladbach’s task became even harder seven minutes into the second half when Tim Kleindienst was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Matanovic added his second with another header in the 77th minute, and Engelhardt completed his brace two minutes later with a further strike from distance.

Maximilian Eggestein completed the scoring with a composed finish inside the area. The result leaves Monchengladbach bottom of the table.

Borussia Dortmund remain second after a 3-0 victory over Paderborn at Signal Iduna Park.

Fabio Silva gave Dortmund an early lead in the fifth minute, racing on to Serhou Guirassy’s long pass, rounding goalkeeper Nahuel Noll and finishing into the empty net.

Paderborn threatened through Curda, who fired into the side netting in the 18th minute, while two Guirassy goals were ruled out by VAR before half-time. Noll then made two saves to deny the Dortmund forward after the break.

Felix Nmecha eventually doubled the hosts’ lead in the 80th minute after combining with fellow substitute Maxi Beier. Marcel Sabitzer struck the crossbar four minutes later, but Nmecha added a spectacular bicycle kick from a Sabitzer cross to complete the scoring.

“It wasn’t easy for the team because Paderborn also played really well, but we didn’t allow anything,” said Dortmund manager Niko Kovac.

“In the second half, the game opened up a bit, partly because the opponent’s energy started to wane. We had enough good chances to score more goals. I was pleased with the team’s performance over the full 90 minutes.

“You can’t expect to dominate and put the game out of reach in the first half.”

Paderborn, in 15th place, remain without a win this season.

Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw by Augsburg at the WWK Arena after Patrick Schick equalised in the 89th minute. Christian Kofane had put Leverkusen ahead in the 18th minute, but Michael Gregoritsch scored twice after half-time, first from open play and then with a header from a Fabian Rieder corner. Schick rescued a point with a finish from 20 metres. Leverkusen are sixth, while Augsburg are third.

Hoffenheim beat VfB Stuttgart 2-1 at the PreZero Arena, with Adam Hlozek scoring twice either side of Maximilian Mittelstadt’s equaliser. Hoffenheim rise to 13th and Stuttgart drop to 14th.

Eintracht Frankfurt won 3-1 away to Mainz, with Can Uzun scoring twice and Jonathan Burkardt also finding the net. Philip Tietz scored a late consolation after Nadiem Amiri missed a penalty. Frankfurt move up to eighth, while Mainz fall to seventh.

FC Koln and Werder Bremen drew 1-1 at the RheinEnergieStadion. Linton Maina scored early for Koln before Niclas Fullkrug equalised in the 69th minute, leaving Koln 11th and Bremen ninth.
