Morocco’s Mehdi Benatia backs Lamine Yamal over Kylian Mbappe in Ballon d’Or debate

Former Morocco international Mehdi Benatia has weighed in on the 2026 Ballon d’Or debate, saying he preferred Lamine Yamal’s approach to that of Kylian Mbappe after the Real Madrid star publicly stated that he deserves to win the award.

Mbappe’s comments in an interview with France Football sparked debate across European football, with Benatia among those offering their views on the Ballon d’Or race.

Speaking on Canal Football Club, the former Morocco defender stressed that he remains a fan of Mbappe but was not impressed by the way the French forward addressed his chances of winning football’s biggest individual prize.

Benatia prefers Yamal’s approach

Benatia said he found Yamal more measured despite the Barcelona star’s young age.

“I am a big fan of Kylian, and he knows that. But I didn’t like his interview. He obviously has a great deal of knowledge about football, and I like that. But I preferred Lamine Yamal’s statement, for example.”

The former defender added: “Despite his young age, I found him to be more sophisticated. I am not arguing with the player. Kvaratskhelia will be present, as well as Ousmane Dembélé, who has been decisive in all the big matches. He scored 6 goals in the World Cup.”

Benatia says Mbappe remains a strong contender

Despite his criticism of Mbappe’s comments, Benatia acknowledged that the Real Madrid forward has a strong case for winning the award.

“If Kylian wins the Ballon d’Or, I won’t be surprised. He finished the season as the Champions League top scorer. He doesn’t need to say that, especially since he gets along well with the other competing players. It’s a bit strange.”

The comments add another African voice to the growing debate surrounding the award, with Morocco’s football community continuing to take a close interest in the global race for the Ballon d’Or.

Ballon d’Or ceremony set for October

The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on October 26, with the British capital set to host the awards event for the first time.

France Football, in collaboration with UEFA, has announced a 30-man shortlist for the prestigious award as anticipation continues to build over who will be crowned the world’s best player.
