Brandon Bokangu: Guingamp’s late transfer signing making a Ligue 2 impact

Brandon Bokangu has taken an unconventional route to professional football, overcoming injuries, dropping into the amateur game and working outside football before earning his opportunity. Now, the En Avant Guingamp forward is attracting attention after a prolific start to life in Ligue 2.

A career shaped by setbacks

Bokangu’s progress has been far from straightforward. At the age of 17, after suffering several injuries, he was released by the Le Mans FC academy and had to restart his career in Regional 3.

It was a difficult period, but the setback did not end his ambition. Away from the pitch, Bokangu worked in several jobs to support himself, including delivering pizzas and preparing orders.

Those experiences helped strengthen his character and gave the attacker an added determination to prove himself. His subsequent rise has been built on persistence after an early interruption to his development.

Power, pace and attacking versatility

Standing at 1.81m, Bokangu combines physical strength with pace and the ability to make runs into space. Although he was initially developed as a midfielder, he moved progressively closer to the opposition goal as his career advanced.

His performances on the right wing for Saumur brought him wider recognition. He then made a significant impact with Paris 13 Atletico, finishing as the top scorer in National 2.

At AS Nancy-Lorraine, Bokangu was used mainly through the middle as a centre-forward. That change in role further demonstrated his ability to operate in different attacking positions and offered another indication of the range in his game.

Guingamp’s influential substitute

Bokangu joined En Avant Guingamp in the final minutes of the summer transfer window on 1 September 2026. He has quickly repaid the club’s faith, scoring four goals in his past four Ligue 2 appearances.

Sylvain Ripoll has frequently used him as an impact substitute, bringing him on from the bench to change matches. The approach produced another decisive moment when Bokangu scored to give Guingamp a 2-1 victory over Annecy.

That goal followed another strike in the previous week and continued a particularly productive run for the forward. His recent form has made him one of the Breton club’s most effective attacking options, despite having arrived only at the very end of the summer window.
