Alidu Seidu: Rennes defender in advanced talks over move to Nice

Ghana international Alidu Seidu is in advanced discussions over a move from Rennes to OGC Nice, with the French club considering a loan deal including an option to buy.

The 25-year-old defender has been left out of Rennes’ plans and could join Nice despite the summer transfer window having closed. OGC Nice are seeking defensive reinforcements after suffering several significant injuries and are exploring the possibility of signing Seidu as a medical joker.

A deal could be completed in the coming days, with negotiations for the proposed loan understood to be at an advanced stage.

Seidu’s potential move would mark the latest step in a career shaped by an unusual and demanding start in Ghana.

Developed without boots

Before entering professional football, Seidu spent around five to six years training at the Jean-Marc Guillou Academy in Ghana.

The academy’s programme required him to complete his sessions barefoot. The method was intended to improve his control, first touch and coordination, while also helping to strengthen his footing and ankles.

Seidu did not receive his first pair of football boots until he was 17, after successfully completing a series of particularly demanding physical tests. The experience played a significant role in developing the character that has become a feature of his game.

Versatility at the back

Standing 1.73m tall, Seidu is known for his commitment in challenges despite his relatively small stature for a central defender.

He was primarily developed as a centre-back but can also operate at right-back or play as part of a back three. That ability to fill several defensive positions has become one of his main strengths.

His versatility has made him useful both at club level and for Ghana. He has represented the Black Stars at the 2022 and 2026 World Cups.

Seidu’s current situation at Rennes, however, has opened the possibility of a change before the season progresses further. If the discussions with OGC Nice lead to an agreement, he would provide additional defensive cover for a side preparing to face Auxerre in the fourth round of the French championship.

Nice’s interest comes as the club responds to its injury problems, while Rennes appear ready to allow the Ghanaian defender to leave on a temporary basis with a possible permanent transfer to follow.
