Mastantuono hat-trick earns Fiorentina first Serie A win under Vanoli

Franco Mastantuono scored three times as Fiorentina beat Venezia 4-2 to claim their first Serie A victory of the season in Paolo Vanoli’s first match as the club’s new manager.

The Argentina international, who is on loan at Fiorentina from Real Madrid, completed his hat-trick after Matteo Pellegrino had added a fourth for the hosts. Akor Adams and Antoine Hainaut scored for Venezia.

Adams opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, finishing from inside the penalty area to give the visitors the lead.

Mastantuono equalised seven minutes later with a low shot from outside the box before putting Fiorentina ahead just one minute after that with a curling effort from beyond the 18-yard area.

The 19-year-old also made club history during the match. At 19 years and 28 days, he became the youngest player to score a brace for Fiorentina, surpassing Claudio Desolati, who achieved the feat aged 19 years and 52 days against Torino in 1974.

Fiorentina extended their advantage in the 66th minute when Pellegrino found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and finished the chance successfully.

Mastantuono completed his hat-trick in the 84th minute, converting from inside the six-yard box.

Hainaut responded two minutes later with a first-time finish to reduce the deficit, but Fiorentina held on for their first three points of the league campaign.

The victory came after Fiorentina had lost their opening three matches under Fabio Grosso. It was also Vanoli’s first game in charge.

Venezia remain bottom of the table without a point.
