Ivan Toney brace helps Al Ahli overturn early deficit against Al Hazem

Al Ahli came from behind to beat Al Hazem 3-1 in the Saudi Pro League, with Ivan Toney scoring twice to strengthen his position at the top of the competition’s scoring charts.

Al Hazem made the perfect start at Al Ahli’s expense, taking the lead after only two minutes. Ahmed Al-Nakhli ran through on goal and finished past Edouard Mendy to give the visitors an early advantage.

Al Ahli responded with increasing pressure and levelled in the 21st minute. Francisco Trincao collected a pass from Toney, broke clear of the Al Hazem defence and produced an excellent finish to make it 1-1.

The home side then completed the turnaround eight minutes later. Al Ahli were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute and Toney converted it confidently, putting his team ahead for the first time.

Toney struck again just before half-time to give Al Ahli control of the match. Saleh Abu Al-Shamat’s effort was saved by Al Hazem goalkeeper Ibrahim Zaid, but Toney reacted quickest to turn the rebound into the net in the 45th minute.

Al Ahli led 3-1 at the interval, but they missed the chance to extend their advantage early in the second half. They were awarded another penalty, yet Toney’s attempt hit the post before he sent the follow-up wide in the 49th minute.

Al Hazem continued to look for a way back into the contest. In the 60th minute, Saud Al-Rashid met a cross from Amir Sayoud with a header, but the attempt went narrowly wide of Mendy’s goal.

The visitors came close again eight minutes from time when Sofiane Bendebka’s shot struck the crossbar, denying Al Hazem a second goal.

Toney’s two goals took his total to 10 for the season, extending his lead in the Roshn Saudi League scoring standings. He also became the player with the most goal contributions in the competition, with 11.

The victory moved Al Ahli up to fifth place with 12 points after seven matches. Al Hazem remain 10th on eight points.
