Barcelona plan new Raphinha contract after stunning start to season

Raphinha’s outstanding start to the season has prompted Barcelona to consider extending the Brazil forward’s contract, despite his current deal running until 30 June 2028.

The 29-year-old has scored eight goals in five competitive appearances, including six in La Liga and two in the UEFA Champions League. He has also embraced a new role on the pitch and taken on greater responsibility as Barcelona captain, both during matches and in the dressing room.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Raphinha seriously considered leaving Barcelona in the summer of 2024. However, the arrival of manager Hansi Flick changed the situation after the German explained his plans to the player, convincing him to remain at the club.

Raphinha produced the best figures of his career during that season, scoring 34 goals and providing 26 assists. His performances led Barcelona to extend his contract after the campaign, with the agreement set to run until 2028.

Injuries prevented him from reaching the same level last season, although he still finished with 21 goals and eight assists. Reports also emerged linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia, but Raphinha rejected those suggestions and made clear that his focus was on continuing with Barcelona.

The forward has developed a particularly strong relationship with Flick and is settled at Spotify Camp Nou. He is also enjoying the position the manager has created for him, operating as a false nine.

In that role, Raphinha has responded to Flick’s confidence with goals, assists and relentless work. He leads Barcelona’s pressing from the front, helping to disrupt the opposition’s build-up play – a demand considered essential by Flick.

Raphinha became Barcelona’s first-choice captain after the departures of ter Stegen and Ronald Araujo. The player is said to be highly satisfied with the understanding he has established with Flick and believes he can continue developing under the manager.

Barcelona sporting director Deco said on Thursday, in an interview with RAC 1, that he wants the club to extend Raphinha’s contract. Deco was the agent who helped bring the Brazilian to Spotify Camp Nou when he represented the player.

No discussions have yet taken place, but negotiations are expected to begin in the coming weeks. Barcelona are not under immediate pressure, yet their intention is to add one or two further seasons to Raphinha’s current agreement.

The proposed extension would suit a player regarded as one of the world’s best forwards. Raphinha is also keen to continue the relationship, having settled happily in Barcelona and wanting to wear the club’s colours for many more years.

He has accepted the responsibility of leading the team and wants to guide Barcelona’s present and future project. The Ballon d’Or is not his immediate concern after what was described as an unfair omission from the 30-player shortlist, but he believes his chances of winning it will be greater as a Barcelona player.
