Brazilian FA agrees record £? rights deal for Copa do Brasil and Supercopa

The Brazilian Football Association has completed the biggest domestic sports rights sale in the country’s history, agreeing a deal worth more than 4bn Brazilian reals (about $800m) for the Copa do Brasil and Supercopa do Brasil.

The agreement covers four seasons, with the Copa do Brasil rights sold to three channels for the period from 2027 to 2030. Rights to the Supercopa do Brasil will run from 2028 to 2031.

According to the Brazilian Football Association, the deal represents more than 1bn reals per edition and is an increase of more than 80% on the previous cycle.

Brazilian Football Association president Samir Xaud said the negotiations reflected the “greatness and potential of Brazilian football” and would transform the “value, visibility and reach of the Copa do Brasil”.

“This is a historic moment for the Copa do Brasil and Brazilian football,” he said. “We are building a new cycle for a competition that represents the scale and diversity of Brazilian football.

“The Copa do Brasil is the tournament that brings together clubs from every part of the country. Our commitment was specifically to ensure that its importance was reflected in the way the competition reaches supporters.”

Xaud added: “These negotiations increase the value of the Copa do Brasil, raise its profile and extend its reach. Most importantly, they create new opportunities for more Brazilians to follow their clubs, wherever they are.

“It is a national competition for the whole of Brazil, and this new cycle must match that scale.”

The increased value of the deal is linked to the division of broadcasting rights across four platforms: free-to-air television, streaming services, pay television and YouTube.

The average audience for Copa do Brasil matches is higher than that for Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A and the Copa Libertadores, according to the source of the report.

Reports also say there will be at least one Copa do Brasil match in every month between January and December as the competition determines its champion.

One change planned for the 2027-2030 cycle is that matches will be played only at weekends from the quarter-finals onwards. The Brazilian Football Association said the schedule would not clash with other competitions.

The association will produce the broadcast of every match and distribute the signal to all channels, following the model used by FIFA and UEFA competitions.

The number of participating clubs will increase from 92 to 126, while the competition will expand to 155 matches.

The Brazilian Football Association has already decided that the Copa do Brasil final will be played as a single match earlier in the season, a move intended to increase its sporting, commercial and tourism appeal.

A fifth international rights package is still being planned, but has not yet been finalised. The association has also not completed the participation-fee structure for clubs next season, which is expected to bring a further increase in club revenues.

The Copa do Brasil winners receive 78m Brazilian reals ($15m).

Atletico Mineiro, Gremio, Vasco da Gama and Palmeiras are competing for the 2026 title.
